Mind & Body

Beyond our students' mental and spiritual health, their physical health also deservedly receives attention. Our students enjoy a variety of physical activities on a daily basis (including recess) resulting in physical conditioning that is always interesting and lively. Some examples of our activities are Ultimate Frisbee, softball, basketball, soccer, and flag football. Our younger students never miss playing a game of 4-Square, playing in the sandbox, or running around on the playground.

Our 2009-10 Physical Education program is an exciting one! Check out our line-up of activities!

The Adventure Program

Beyond school grounds, our Middle School students participate in canoeing, backpacking, and camping trips throughout the year. Also during the year, they pay visits to the University of California, Santa Barbara's Rock Climbing Center as well as its indoor ropes course. These visits allow the students to stretch themselves beyond their perceived limits and quite literally, "reach new heights".

Chess is an exercise of infinite possibilities for the mind, one which develops mental abilities used throughout life: concentration, critical thinking, abstract reasoning, problem solving, pattern recognition, strategic planning, creativity, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation, to name a few. Chess can be used very effectively as a tool to teach problem solving and abstract reasoning. Learning how to solve a problem is more important than learning the solution to any particular problem.

With this in mind, the St. John of Damascus Academy find utmost value in teaching our students to play chess. The Academy has been fortunate to have the support and advice of two-time National Chess Champion Andrew Svehaug as we develop our chess club.

Andrew has come to the Academy for weekend workshops devoted to teaching advanced techniques and strategies.

Andrew Svehaug's chess career began in fourth grade and includes, among many other triumphs:

  • 2001 National K-9 Champion (Kansas City)
  • Coach of Alec Ho, 2002 National Kindergarten Champion.
