SJDA 5th Annual 100 Hole Golf Marathon - A Huge Success Despite Cooler Temps!

By Wendy Bodnar

The 34 golfers navigated their way up the 154 through the fog on Monday, May 17th to find Rancho San Marcos golf course surprisingly clear! Even though the weather wasn't what we expected the day was far more than we expected. Sherie Shackelford, Glenn Ritsema and Sonia Hobden registered each golfer and gave them their golf shirts (sponsored by Perry Ford), visors (sponsored by Laurance C. Lander, CPA) and State Farm goodie bags. After an awesome breakfast they were sent on their way after a welcome from Deacon Howard Shannon, Paul Bodnar and me. The sponsor's were proudly displayed around the Clubhouse as Shirley Dillon - her sister Carol and volunteer helper Kris Roberts set up the Silent Auction's - 90 some items! We also manuvered the Woman's Spa Day to warmer locations as best we could in anticipation that someone would make it up the hill to our venue. Meanwhile during the live auction Hani AbuGhazaleh had set up our sjda website with all of the auction items, descriptions and bidding process to add to the fun of the auction.

Courtney Shannon and Jen Habermann of Dolce Salon and Spa were kept busy with manicures, pedicures and scalp massages from 10:30am to 3:30pm! Alaina Benham, our massage therapist for the day, was giving chair massages and full body massages at a racers pace and Maria Carbonell was helping people keep relaxed with her Sama Aruveyda techniques. Ben Hyatt our official photographer from SantaBarbarian.com caught all of the activities through his lense - picture gallery to follow!

At 11:30am the golfers met at hole number 9 - sponsored by Rabobank for the closest to the pin competition in which John Casey Shannon took the prize of a Cobra Baffler Utility Club. Then at the putting competition sponsored by Economy Tree Service - Fr. Nicholas Speier edged out what looked to be the winner, Larry Lander and won a brand new putter. Following lunch the golfers set out to complete their goal of achieving 100 holes so the pledges could be collected.

The wine and cheese silent auction brought even more people up to finalize their bids and join in the gaming tables provided by Deanna Waller and Nina Svele of Dice and Diamonds Gaming. Everyone had fun and learned how to play Black Jack with play money and whatever they had left got them more raffle tickets toward 5 great prizes. Corie Sieck provided a wide selection of cheeses - from pesto layered cheese to a curry concoction that had everyone talking - Corie also provided a great lunch for the spa volunteers!

Many people took us up on our offer of free childcare organized by Michelle Madrigal with the help of Lina Coe, Mrs. Lisa Markos and our skilled babysitters. They provided a day of fun and play for all of the children in our SJDA campus boardroom with dinner provided by Pizza Guru.

We are still tallying the day - but we know that the Silent Auction brought in over $4,000!!! The spa, gaming tables, raffle and other throw ins brought in another $1,000 and we will be inputting all of our golfer pledges during the week and update you on our final numbers.

We thank all of you for your participation in this amazing day! Everyone played a part in this event to raise funds and awareness of our amazing school that we pray continues for years and generations to come. We thank all of our sponsors especially our event sponsor - American Student Transportation, we thank all of you who provided or sought our silent auction items, we thank our golfers who diligently raised pledges, we thank our golf committee team and especially Howard Shannon for his dedication to making this golf marathon a success over the past 5 years.

We already have our first golfer registered for 2011 - Mrs. Nadine deBruin! See you all next year for an even bigger and better event!
