02/04/20105th/6th MathThe students should draw an equilateral triangle using a given line with A and B as end points (extremities). This line can be any length, but not too large since that would make the project unwieldy. 1-2 inches is best. The students cannot simply draw the triangle, they need to use circles to draw the triangle. I have given them clues in class and I would like them to try to figure it out. This is the beginning of Euclidean geometry.

01/11/20105th/6th MathThe students should do internet research on their mathematicians. Though Wikipedia is not a great source for academic papers, the fact that the students are trying to find out as much as possible makes Wikipedia a good place to look. I've seen the pages there, and they are well referenced, so they should feel free to use the information there along with the other sources that have been used thus far. Each student already has a good amount of notes taken, and those should be typed into a coherent form, and additional material should be found where necessary. I will post individual assignments next.
01/11/2010Humanities- Crusades Essay due Mon.: Intro 3 Paragraph Body (3 Main Points) Conclusion
01/11/2010Math for GianniGianni needs to fill in some aspects of his research to cover some of the important findings of Fibonacci. Wikipedia has a few pages on fibonacci, fibonacci numbers, fibonacci primes, and the golden ratio. These will be difficult to understand (I do not understand much of them) but they are short, and there are still usable, understandable sections to look over. Try to type one to two pages describing Fibonacci and what he did. Oh, and don't forget to explain his work's connection to indian-arabic numerals and ideas and how he is important for bringing them to Europe.
01/11/2010Math for AlecThere is a plethora of material on Pythagoras and the Pythagoreans, this is both good and bad. It's good because there's so much to write about, and it's bad because there can be too many things to write about and Alec may not know what to do next. He has a simple biographical sketch written already, and so he should focus on high points such as the Pythagorean theorem - what is it and why is it useful? If he has time, he should look at how Pythagoras influenced Plato in his religious/philosophical views - these do not have to be in depth, we can go there later.
01/11/2010Math for ColeCole has a good biographical sketch and a good amount of other information of Archimedes already. His most important task is to type this in a usable form, not necessarily paper form but a very organized note form. And he should try his best to find more information to make the work even better.
01/08/2010Middle School Math workFor the next few weeks, the students will be putting together short research projects of their own choosing on a mathematician or mathematical school of thought. The students all received some form of research packet or a book to help them get started. We will visit the library to do research during math time until the projects are in good shape or until they are completed, depending on the pace of the process. In either case, we will return to regular math classes a week or two after Christmas break. We will return to these projects again for the end of the year projects as well.
01/08/20105th/6th MathDo worksheet on decimals. Comparing positive and negative numbers using a number line is extra credit.
01/08/2010Humanities-Continue writing your persuasive essay based on the points I gave you in class (handout) -Memorize Anglo-Saxon Riddle
01/07/2010HumanitiesWrite intro paragraph of your persuasive essay: Why is my side just (right)? 1st sentence should catch the reader's attention and make them want to read more Rest of intro should list the support for your side. Ex: "The Crusaders' cause is just because they are Christians, they are coming to the aid of their fellow Byzantine Christians, and they seek to take back Jerusalem from the infidel."
01/06/20105th/6th MathStudents should finish the worksheets and continue to find information on their mathematicians.
01/06/2010Humani
01/04/2010Middle School MathOver the break, students should read the materials that they found at the library and write notes on their mathematician's important life events and mathematical contributions. I assigned this earlier this week, but not everyone produced notes. The students should NOT think that "mental notes" are sufficient. about a page of handwritten is possible to accomplish over the break without taking too much time, especially since they should simply be summarizing the materials that they have received, not producing new information or synthesizing that information into an argument. This should be a very simple historical sketch.
12/17/2009Humanities -TEST: BYZANTIUM, ICONOCLASM, AND THE EAST/WEST SCHISM -RECYCLE ALL OLD PAPERS!!!
12/16/2009Middle School MathThe students do not have math on Tuesday Dec. 15. So they should do some research for their projects and write about half a page of notes on the most important life events and intellectual contributions of their mathematician from the packets/books they have received or from their own research. This can be bullet points, it does not have to be in proper sentence/paragraph form because they are just collecting data right now.

12/07/20095th/6th mathSince this week's classes have been moved around a bit because of various field trips, I want to be sure that the students are prepared for the exam on Monday. Please have them finish problems 17-22 on page 99 as well as problems 26-34 on page 99. They were begun in class, and so they should not be difficult to finish. To prepare for the exam they also ought to look over page 100 and be sure that they are familiar with the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems on that page, especially the section that begins with number 13. We covered all these for the past few weeks, and they ought to refer to the earlier examples from the lessons if they have questions.
