Ever since I moved to Santa Barbara I wanted to try to surf. I started off reading a book called "Fit to Surf" and I realized that I was and still am completely unfit to surf! But I still wanted to try it. Then I heard about the surfing lessons at SJDA with the middle school lead by Dr. David Rosenberg. So, every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30 - 3:00pm you can catch us catching waves near Devereaux Point in Isla Vista.
We start by warming up with push ups, jumping jacks, running on the spot and some mild stretching. Then its off to hit the surf. My first time out was difficult as I could barely stay on my board in the prone position let alone think about standing. I watched in awe as Cole glided on the top of the wave standing with ease. The others were very proficient as well - paddling, turning and attempting to catch the wave.
After 3 weeks, I can actually catch a wave and I have gotten up onto my knees twice now with confidence. I am still not a surfer dudette, but I am well on my way. Yes, I have a few bruises, scratches and stiff muscles - but this is all worth the rush of riding that wave!
